Russian Bride ‘Phenomenon’ in Fiction and Real Life

Silver Spring, MD June 24, 2004 -- More than one hundred Russian/American couples, Russian brides and brides-to-be will gather in AFI Silver TAheater and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, MD, the suburbs of Washington, DC for a special event. They are invited for the screening of Award Winning US Independent film Postmark Paradise. The movie depicts the story of a so-called Russian mail-order-bride who came to a small Michigan town in order to marry an “American man of her dreams.” All the Russian/American couples - Encounters International in the event introduced participants to each other, a successful Bethesda, MD based matchmaking service founded more than 10 years ago by Natasha Spivack, a former professor of Russian at Johns Hopkins University.

“We are going to screen and judge the movie about the situations that most of the people have little idea of – Russian brides in America. Of course we are not the typical audience and we can immediately tell the truth from the fantasy, because we all have lived through that and we’ll be able to share our thoughts and real experiences with a film producer and the screenwriter after the movie”, said Spivack who served as a consultant for the movie on the Russian women issues.

This is the first event of its kind and a must to attend to experience the ‘Russian Bride’ phenomenon in fiction and real life all at the same time.

The program of the event includes pre-screening wine and cheese reception starting at 5:30 PM, film screening at 6 PM, post screening diner and discussions at 7:45 PM.

The couples and Russian single ladies will be available for interviews.
